ねぶた祭が終わり夜が涼しくなってきて、今年も夏はあっという間に去っていったと感じていませんか? 秋は、秋ならではの楽しみがありますが、Ben’s Rankingでは、秋がラストかもしれません。
September might be a slightly gloomy month for many Americans. You may know, but September 11, 2001 marked a turning point for America.
This month, I want to talk about that day and about the most important reason I am happy to be living in Japan.
9月は、多くのアメリカ人にとっては少し陰気な月かもしれません。ご存知かもしれませんが、2011年9月11日はアメリカにとって節目でした。今回は、その日のことと日本に住んでいて一番よかったと思っている理由について話したいと思います。
I was ten years old. My memory is understandably a little fuzzy, but my dad had just passed away two weeks ago, and we were in the middle of moving.
The living room was almost completely empty, and I was watching tv using a box as a chair. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what I had just witnessed.
私は、10歳でした。記憶はさすがに少し曖昧ですが、父が2週間前に亡くなり、引っ越しの準備の最中でした。がらがらになったリビングで箱を椅子として使ってテレビを見ながら、その時は何を目撃したのか全く理解できませんでした。
I think every American is able to tell you where they were and what they were doing when 9/11 happened. It’s been more than twenty years since it happened, but the effects of that day still remain.
アメリカ人は誰でも、9月11日のテロ事件が起こった時に、どこにいて何をしていたか、必ず覚えていると思います。その日から、20年以上が経ちましたが、その事件の影響が未だに残っています。
In America, for both domestic and international flights, you have to take off your shoes when going through security.
I didn’t know that in Japan you don’t have to do that. One time at the airport when I started taking off my shoes, one woman whispered to her friend, “are we supposed to do that?” I was really embarrassed.
アメリカでは飛行機に乗る場合、国内線、国際線に関わらず、セキュリティチェックを受ける際に靴を脱がなければなりません。
日本では、靴を脱ぐ必要がないと分からなくて、ある時、靴を脱ごうとしたら、後ろに並んだ女性が友達に「ええ、靴を脱ぐの?」と呟きました。すごく恥ずかしかったです。（笑）
It’s easy to feel like no one trusts you in America. In Japan, there are sometimes security gates at the exits of stores, but in America it’s very rare for them not to be installed.
アメリカでは、誰からも信用されていないと感じやすいと思います。日本では、防犯ゲートが店の出入口にたまに設置していますが、アメリカで設置しない店は珍しいです。
I don’t think it’s very well-known abroad, but some stores will lock up expensive items like razors and make up to prevent theft. If you want to buy those products, you have to ask an employee and follow them to the register.
海外ではよく知られていないと思いますが、防犯対策として、店が剃刀や化粧品のような高い商品をロックします。そういう商品を買いたい場合、店員さんを呼んで解除してもらって、レジまで同行しないといけません。
It’s unfortunate, but I think it is more well-known that in America we have drills for mass shooters in school.
また、残念ながら、アメリカの学校では銃乱射に備えて訓練をすることもよく知られていると思います。
This month’s article was very heavy, but I think it is important to talk about America’s problems sometimes. It is so much safer in Japan, I feel safe not locking my front door (many of you have scolded me for doing that, though!)
今月のメルマガは、相当ヘビーでしたが、アメリカの社会問題について語るのも大事だと思います。日本の治安は格段に良くて、アパートのドアの鍵を閉めなくても不安になりませんでした。（多くの方に心配されたので、いまはちゃんと鍵を閉めていますが（笑））
Don’t worry, next month is October! I can promise next month’s article won’t be sad, but I can’t promise it won’t be spooky!
